How to Die Gracefully is a five-book comic space opera, best read in order, beginning with Deadeye and the Widowmaker. Consolidated Frontier Holdings is strip-mining a dying sector from a fleet of rusting deep-space barges, and to keep morale up it has made "authentic frontier living" compulsory: cowboy dusters, mandatory high-noon duels, a saloon bolted over the airlock. Into it steps Wilbur "Deadeye" Grubb, the least brave man in the sector, who wants precisely one thing, which is to not die, aboard a barge that treats staying alive as a failure of spirit. Dry, skeptical, and very funny, in the lineage of Terry Pratchett, Grant Naylor's Red Dwarf, and Douglas Adams.
